Samsung is the largest supplier of OLED displays for smartphones and smart watches. The Apple Watch range uses Samsung’s OLED panels, and the South Korean tech giant is trying to secure its leadership by pushing the transition to next-generation display technology.
The latest report claims that Samsung formed a team last year to commercialize microLED displays for smartwatches. The company is currently selling high-end TVs that use microLED, so making a commercially viable solution for smartwatches isn’t too far-fetched. In fact, sources familiar with the matter say the team’s deadline is this year.
Now, even if Samsung’s newly formed team gets the job done, we wouldn’t expect this year’s Galaxy Watch or the Apple Watch to feature those displays. The development of the two companies’ wearables for this year may be complete, but next year’s watches could get a solid upgrade.
microLED panels even outperform OLED in terms of brightness and energy efficiency in turn providing better sunlight clarity.
