Yesterday, Samsung at the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4. A full review of the Z Flip 4 will be released next week, but since this is my first experience with the Flip, I wanted to share some initial thoughts. I reviewed the Galaxy Z Fold 2 for my podcast in 2021, but so far, I’ve never played with the clamshell foldable. I have to admit, I see the appeal of it. For those unfamiliar with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, this is a great Small phone that won’t take up much space in your pocket or bag. It closes on its own, protecting the inner folding screen, rather than relying on a small outer screen for things like notifications and widgets. When you want to interact with the phone, you turn it on and it becomes your familiar full-size black tablet. Otherwise, it’s a small cube that can easily fit into any pocket. First, let’s talk about nostalgia. Flip phones were popular decades ago , this phone feels right to me. It’s just fun to open the phone to answer the call and close it when you’re done. The fact that you can still get the full smartphone experience is just what counts.

It’s hard to get used to when your phone is off most of the time. That’s the whole point of the cover screen, and it’s for the ecosystem of devices you might have around you. When I moved into the Galaxy Z Flip 4, I also paired my Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and paired it with my Anker Liberty 3 Pro earbuds — $130 at Amazon at the time of writing — and I was ready . Right away, on a bike trip, my phone rang in my pocket, I saw who it was on my watch, and I answered the call with my earbuds. It’s not a unique experience by any means, but it seems to be built for the Galaxy Flip, and I’m honestly surprised that I experienced it on my first day with the phone.
On my first day using my phone, one of the things that impressed me was the The interaction of the phone is as much as the smartphone is. For example, you can access your quick toggles from the cover screen with the phone off. This includes the flashlight – which is why I access the quick toggle most of the time. When you close the Z Flip 4 and the screen protector is facing you, the flashlight is also facing you. So instead of blinding you when you tap to turn the flashlight on, the phone tells you to turn it and press the volume buttons to turn the flashlight on and off. clever. Kick it old school

When you’re shooting video with your phone, you can hold the phone halfway and hold it’s lower half, which is a more comfortable way to hold the phone for that scene. It’s reminiscent of video cameras in the old days. Of course, you can’t talk about the Flip without talking about using the phone as your own tripod. This allows you to shoot stabilized video, take selfies with the main camera, and experiment with different angles as you shoot. I haven’t had enough time with the camera to draw any conclusions yet, but it’s very similar to the Galaxy Z Flip 3, at least on paper, so check out our review of the phone to see what you’ll understand. Talking about using Flip when it’s off, when you play media, you can use the cover The screen and volume buttons control this media. Another smart implementation here is that when the phone is turned off, the volume buttons flip due to the orientation that covers the screen. You can also double-tap the power button to open the camera when the phone is off, but it uses the cover screen to preview the camera. You can touch the cover screen to take a photo, wave to it to trigger the photo, or just point in the general direction of the subject and press the volume buttons to shoot. there are more

Moving to the internal display, the ultra-thin glass touch and moving icons feel good. It is very similar to glass, but not quite. The inner screen is also a bit like a dust magnet, which can get annoying very quickly. But let’s get to the part you want to hear – let’s talk about creases.
Oh, you bet it’s there and striking. The screen discolors a bit at the crease, but that’s just a physical phenomenon. Light behaves differently at different angles, and not many UTGs can fix that. That being said, if you’re looking at the phone head-on, it’s not as noticeable. In fact, the only question you have to ask yourself is whether you care. Personally don’t like it.
The hinge gap is still there, I still don’t like it. I know it’s very difficult to get rid of it, especially when you’re trying to get rid of the aforementioned crease. Like the crease, it will either bother you or it won’t.
Finally, including the Samsung feature doesn’t decide whether I think it’s neat or a gimmick, but when you put the When the phone is halfway open and an app is launched, you can choose to launch the app on the entire screen or just the top. The bottom half can become a trackpad/mouse, or adjust the brightness or volume, take a screenshot, or open the notification shade. The latter two feel a bit like Samsung realizes it’s only putting in three useful features, but thinks it needs two more.

I’ve played with this phone many times before my review next week, but the final note is that, The open phone feels much taller than a regular phone. The 6.7-inch screen has a 9:22 aspect ratio, which makes it a tall boi. Also, the power button/fingerprint scanner is pretty high on the phone as the hinge is in the middle of the phone. If you have small hands, you might want to set up face unlock.
One final note: I encourage you to check out the community around foldables, especially the Galaxy Z Flip and Fold. Reddit is a treasure trove of foldable screen animations, tips and tricks. I’ve only scratched the surface so far, but if you own a foldable, be sure to check it out. This is absolute gold. It’s been a fun 24 hours and I’m looking forward to the next few weeks and a few Month, I’m really leaning on the foldable space. There are some great ideas here, but it will take me a while to figure out if they are worth the premium. If I were the Galaxy S23 Plus product manager, I’d be a little nervous.
