Another week, another conflicting rumor about the death or resurrection of the fabulous Samsung Fan Edition series. This time, it’s bad news – apparently the Galaxy S03 FE didn’t end up coming.
It may be sad, but on the other hand, the same source brings us an incredible flip side to this rumor. The South Korean company is said to be working on a “tri-fold” device that “may finally ship this year.” This is typical “big news” news, as we’ve basically had single-hinge foldables for the past few years.
This promises to be a dual-hinge, three-part foldable, similar to several concepts Samsung Display showed off at CES in January. No more details on this right now, but it’s been a while since a whole new form factor joined the mobile world, so we’re excited. There’s also the fact that this device still involves folding, which is basically a solved problem at this point.
So while the form factor itself may be new, the fact that it’s an extension (both literally and figuratively) to what already exists means it’s likely to drop when something completely new hits the market for the first time All the usual problems arise – it’s just an extra hinge and a more complicated screen in this case. New, yes, never done before, too, but not quite out of left field.
