Samsung’s new SmartThings Station is a multi-purpose hub for the smart home – it’s the hub, doubles as the button, and has a 1200 built-in W Qi charger. Note that it supports the Matter protocol, which has been widely adopted by the smart home industry – it unifies the Samsung and Google ecosystems, and even Apple added Matter support to iOS 15.1.
New Samsung SmartThings Station
SmartThings Station’s basic function is to connect all your smart home devices, which may use one of several protocols. This allows you to control them from your phone even when you’re not at home.
You can also control them from the Station itself – a single tap, double tap or long press triggers a scene. This could, for example, turn off all lights and turn off certain appliances when you leave the house (and turn them back on when you arrive). It puts your TV into game mode and your phone into do-not-disturb mode. It also closes the blinds and lowers the temperature when you’re getting ready for bed.
Station also integrates with the SmartThings Find network. Since it is always home, it can detect if your registered devices are home and when they leave/return. This includes the devices you carry with you — phones, tablets, watches, earbuds — but also anything with a Galaxy SmartTag or SmartTag+ attached to it. The SmartThings Find network is growing rapidly, reaching 175 million registered devices in the last year.
Finally, the Station can charge your phone, watch, earbuds, and any other Qi-enabled device (up to
W). It’s a neat addition because you want the charging station to be in a convenient location to use its buttons, which also means it’s in a convenient location to place your device for charging. When charging is complete, you’ll get a notification so you can pick it up.
SmartThings Station will be available in the US in early February 1200, it will also be available in South Korea. Station will be available in black and white.
