The two of you are really nice. At SC103, duality is a boon to founders Sophie Andes Gascon and Claire McKinney, as well as the fans with whom they engage in substantive conversations.
Instead of showing the season, the designers boxed up their fall collections, secured them with logo tape, and sent them to a friend in California to wear in her world on it. “It’s really nice to see people in their most natural clothes,” says Gascon. This isn’t the first time the team has experimented in this way, letting others tell the brand’s story, though some of it was also filmed around New York City when the clothes came back East.
SC103’s series seems to have grown organically in the individual ways of the two founders. McKinney has been teaching tailoring lessons, and that’s likely to influence fall’s sartorial touches, like a rustic fitted wool jacket with red-stitched buttonholes and dangling threads. It’s in stark contrast to the all-out bohemian vibe of an embellished crochet dress that could almost double as textile art. Ditto a dark green satin jacket quilted to resemble contour lines on a topographic map. The inside is as beautiful as the outside.
The inside/outside dichotomy may be the key to understanding SC103. The quilted jacket documents the intimacy that builds between maker and material within the safety of the four walls, with viscerality as it steps out into the world where it belongs, and where Gascon and McKinney relinquish control. Letting go is the freedom to let the material dictate the outcome, to allow room for imperfections and irregularities, or to ask a friend to style it for you. “Once we’ve done something, it’s not just meant to be watched or put away, it’s meant to be lived in the world and thrown around. When we sent the series to our friend Danny, We said, “If something happens, don’t worry, it’s just clothes. “We can do it again, it’s not that serious in our eyes.”
A hand-dyed red dress with a triangle yoke and asymmetrical button fastening is very chic . The same goes for a gingham tank top worn with matching cargo pants and pajamas. Their no-trash bags are still all the rage. SC103 brings artisanship and authenticity to the table, something that cannot or should not be overlooked.
