In the director’s chair, supporting the musician and actor in reflecting on her recent past is Alek Keshishian, who previously took the helm Madonna: Truth or Dare , an all-out thumping attempt to demystify the pop icon.

“I’m a little nervous, But also happy to share this side of me,” Gomez wrote on Instagram ahead of the October movie trailer release . In the opening scene, she looks eager in the back seat of a taxi, speaking to herself in voiceover. “Be yourself, Selena,” she said. “Nobody cares what you’re doing. It’s about who I am. No problem with where I am. I’m grateful I’m still alive.” SERIES OF SHOTS Gomez’s Home video, interspersed with clips of her being followed by the camera crew, rehearsing, performing on stage, hospitalized, and later lying in bed, swallowed by self-doubt. “My whole life, since I was a kid, I’ve been work,” she said at one point, fighting back tears.

But we watched her slowly take hold of her new life and learn how to help others with similar problems. “Everything I’ve been through — it’s going to be there,” she continued. “I just consider it my friend now. This is my beginning.”
