Serena Williams said earlier this month that she will “stay away from tennis.” Her next appearance is the U.S. Open, which may be the last of her career. Williams’ sojourn in Queens, New York, began with a first-round win over Danka Kovinic. But her next challenge is Anett Kontaveit, the second-ranked player in the world.
In an upset, Williams beat Kontaveit 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 to take third place round to get a seat. Williams is now 42-0 in the first two rounds of the U.S. Open, according to ESPN’s broadcast.
The first set was a tense match for the two stars who had to go to the tiebreaker, which was a big deal for Williams a method. From there, it was Konteveit who took the second set. But once the decisive third set was hit, it was all Williams, and she ended the game in epic fashion.
