Shams: Thunder's Chet Holmgren worried about ligament damage after foot injury

Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Chet Holmgren is concerned about damaged ligaments in his foot, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium.

The 20-year-old will reportedly receive more input to determine the severity of the injury.

Holmgren has been in the national spotlight since he attended Minnehaha College High School. He is the No. 1 college recruit in the nation in 2021, according to the 247Sports composite rankings, and has committed to playing at Gonzaga.

During his lone season in college, Holmgren was the recognized All-American second team, And won the WCC Defensive Player of the Year. The 7-footer averaged 14.1 points and 9.9 rebounds to help the Bulldogs reach the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament. Holmgren was selected by the Thunder with the second overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft. He made an impact in five games in Summer League, averaging 14.0 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.8 blocks. Over the past two seasons, the Thunder have been undergoing a major roster rebuild. They’re starting to see results from players like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Luguentz Dort and Josh Giddey who look like key players in the future. Holmgren has the potential to be the centerpiece of the roster. His injury was a setback, and now the Thunder will wait to see how big the setback is, depending on the final diagnosis.
