These days, if there’s a Marvel movie, there’s a good chance Benedict Wong will show up.
Playing the dedicated Sorcerer Supreme — also known as Wong — the actor has become the first of the Marvel Cinematic Universe hookups 4 stages. After appearing in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Wong also appeared in Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings , Spider-Man: No Way Out Return , Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the recent Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney .
On the red carpet of last year’s No Way Home , Wong revealed that Marvel head Kevin Feige gave him Email that the franchise is “quickly becoming the WCU” or Wong Cinematic Universe.
“I got the email and I’m seriously considering it as a wallpaper,” Wong joked to The Hollywood Reporter . “I just love playing the role and where it takes me. In every kind of project they invite me to, it just peels another layer of onion, you know? You’ll find out more about Sorcerer Supreme’s weirdness where.”
Marvel fans on Twitter have embraced the idea of a yellow movie universe, and Twitter following has become so evident, Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Masra) Ni) even admits it.
“God, everyone loves Huang,” Jen Walters told the camera in episode four. “It’s like giving the show a week of Twitter armor.”
“I’m really happy, you know?” Wong added of the social media following. “Marvel fans are a little bit enthusiastic about me, and I appreciate that. I take my job very seriously when it comes to acting, but I also enjoy playing ball in this universe.”
In a chat with Hollywood Reporter , Wang, Zeng with Doctor Strange joins Marvel, in She-Hulk in episode four talking about the future of WCU, welcoming newcomers to the series and the magic of VFX. Read on for the full interview.
It’s always a surprise for fans to see Huang pop up in many different Marvel movies, and most recently, you Participated in two episodes She-Hulk .
Very atmospheric, isn’t it? The show itself is refreshing. This is awesome. I just jumped in to watch and I just said to my wife, “I haven’t seen my episode yet, but I just love this show.” Credit to these incredible women who led a A very respectable series, and there is so much creativity [there]. And then there’s Tatiana [Maslany] and Ginger Gonzaga (who plays Jen’s best friend Nikki) — I knew that when I first got on the show. Sparks flew between the two. I’ve never actually seen Tatiana and Ginger, but I just saw this super fast, kind of ping pong game [between them].
Throughout Phase 4, feel like your character Huang is the main link between the movie and the show. You said in an email last year that Kevin Feige called it the “Yellow Movie Universe.” Since then, WCU has really gone viral on Twitter. How have you reacted to this momentum for the character?
I got the email and I’m seriously considering getting it as a wallpaper. No, I told the internet, it’s everywhere now. But it’s really his kind words. To me, I’m like an overexcited puppy when I get a call from him, you know? Like, “Hey, do you want to join X?” This is from me personally, and I’m such a Marvel fan. Growing up as a child, I read Spider-Man comics, and then I found myself in this world and found a character named Huang. I just love playing this role and where it takes me. In every kind of project they invite me to, it just peels another layer of onion, you know? You’ll find out more about Witcher Supreme’s quirks.
When things broke out on Twitter, did you pay to pay attention to this reaction on social media?
Yeah, I mean, [they] send me stuff and then you kind of just get into a nosy bunny Hole. I’m really happy, you know? Marvel fans are a little bit enthusiastic about me, and I’m grateful for that. When it comes to acting, I take my job very seriously, but I also really enjoy playing ball in this universe. I’m watching episode 4 of [She-Hulk] today and I’m amazed at the work of the VFX team. Just a simple gesture and I can play the movements there and then they can fill in what. Or just wave your arm and suddenly, something else appears. For me, it’s just the realm of the big kid I’ve always been. I have the most incredible team around to make it all happen. It looks visually stunning, especially with all the goblins in [Episode 4].
That scene in particular, there must be dozens of goblins that the VFX team added in post-production. Since you didn’t actually fight the goblin during filming, did you just provide it with wings to some extent?
Yes, exactly. do not know. They just give you, you know, “this is your smoke and mirror.” You have a little stick and you’re swinging it from side to side, or you pretend to grab things and throw them into something. You just don’t know. You listen to them, really, they saved you. They save you a lot.
In She-Hulk ) Episode 4 , we also meet Madisynn, played by Patty Guggenheim, who becomes unlikely friends with Sorcerer Supreme. Through this, we can see your character in a different setting, just at home The Sopranos . Was it fun for you to explore a side of him we’ve never seen before?
Yes, no? This is a window into Wong’s world. What happens when we don’t accomplish these tasks we have to accomplish. Just to see him get some respite and watch him settle down with a biscotti in his mouth. And then from the sky fell the incredible Patty Guggenheim, who was one of the episode’s breakouts and deserved all the flowers. She was a member of Groundlings, and when I was there she always, always walked away with the staff of the week. Her improv skills – you forget you’re supposed to perform with her because you’re just too busy wowing.
Tatiana is new MCU , and Shang Chi and Simu Liu Gomez in Xochitl in Doctor Strange middle. As a franchise veteran, is it your job to welcome them in?
Yes. It was funny because I remember being with Sim. While they were filming, I think when they saw me coming, they finally realized they were in a Marvel movie. I kind of agree with my wax print. I mean, obviously, there’s nothing I can do other than say welcome to the MCU — or sorry, WCU or whatever. No matter what learning curves and curveballs I can add, or any kind of advice, I’m always there. Especially for Xochitl, it’s just a rabbit with wide-eyed eyes in front of the headlights. I think it’s really a responsibility, as a member of a big band, to keep people stable and reassure them.
[For She-Hulk] This is also a high compliment to Tatiana. It’s hard, isn’t it? You’re in, you’re at the helm of something, introducing a new superhero character. What makes it so different from others? I really enjoyed seeing its fragility, its frustration, and its strength. I have no doubt that She-Hulk will be one of the MCU’s MVPs.
Fans are starting a campaign for the Wong series. Is this what you want too?
You know, a lot of people have said that. Yes, of course I can think of some ideas. But hey, that’s not what I’m pushing. If you see anyone, please send your question there. I mean, look, I love playing the character, and I think we could go into more scope in a series, yeah.
She-Hulk on Disney+ Thursday.
