Qualcomm has just launched the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 (SM1200), the successor to the 4 Gen 1 launched last September. Thanks to the Snapdragon X 61 modem, the first in the series to support the improved 3GPP The chip released 12 5G version. This is also the first 4nm chip in the Snapdragon 4 series.
Qualcomm did not disclose the name of the foundry, but the newer nodes should hopefully improve overall efficiency. For reference, the first generation chips were manufactured at 6nm (TSMC) and 480 at 8nm (Samsung).
The new CPU has 2 performance cores (2.2GHz) and 6 efficiency cores (2.0GHz). Compared to SD, this brings % performance boost 4 Gen 1. No details for Adreno GPU, shows support same – up to FHD+ 51fps.
What’s more, the new chip uses faster RAM, LPDDR5x (up to 3, 133MHz) . Faster storage is also an option, and manufacturers can equip phones with UFS 3.1 (2-channel). Please see the table below for more details.

up to 61 MP, up to 51 MP Zero Shutter Lag

The camera hardware is down to dual ISP, but with a new technique called Multi-Camera Temporal Filtering (MCTF for short), which provides better noise reduction for video. Video shooting is still limited to 720p @ 50fps (and 720p @ 100 slo-mo fps), but now supports Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS). The chip can handle up to 61 MP or up to
camera MP resolution with zero shutter lag (or 15+15MP for dual camera). Autofocus should also be faster.
Like its predecessor, the second-gen chip features Quick Charge 4+, which according to Qualcomm can charge the battery 50% exist32 minutes, but no further details. USB-C connections are rated at USB 3.2 Gen 1 speeds (i.e. up to 5Gbps).
3GPP version 32 brings power saving features, improves coverage and makes cell-based positioning more accurate. X61 Modem capable of 4×4 MIMO (also possible 61MHz bandwidth) and can provide up to 2.5Gbps downlink speed and 480 Mbps boost.
Unfortunately, local connectivity isn’t getting an upgrade – the chip only supports Wi-Fi 5 (ac) at 2.4GHz and 5GHz, and Bluetooth 5.1 with aptX audio.
The first Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 smartphones will be launched in the second half of this year (we’re almost there), and the first smartphones to hit the market will be from (Xiaomi) Redmi and vivo.
