Sony today announced the new DualSense Edge controller for the PlayStation 5 controller. It’s the most customizable version of the PlayStation controller to date.
DualSense Edge has two new buttons on the back, two function buttons on the bottom, updated joystick and trigger buttons, and an enhanced USB design.
The back buttons (LB and RB) provide additional functionality that allows remapping of controls. The buttons are interchangeable between lever and half-dome designs.
The new joystick on the DualSense Edge has a replaceable cover that can be switched between standard, high dome and low dome. The entire stick module is also replaceable, so if one or both of your sticks break, just remove and replace without having to replace the entire controller.
Users can adjust joystick sensitivity and dead zone. You can create profiles and switch between them using preset controls, as well as access other functions such as game volume, chat balance and the controller profile settings menu via the two function buttons on the joystick.
The trigger button at the top is also adjustable. You can change the travel and dead zone with switches on the back. Rather than having a long trigger stroke for each game, set a long stroke for a racing game and a shorter one for a shooter.
Sony has also upgraded the USB-C connector with a lockable locking mechanism that opens and doesn’t pop out accidentally.
The rest of the differences are aesthetic. The DualSense Edge features a black touchpad with the PlayStation icon and a glossy black finish around the sticks. The front buttons and the area around the back buttons also have a black background.
Beyond that, DualSense Edge is essentially DualSense and includes all existing DualSense features such as haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, built-in microphone, motion controls, and more.
The DualSense Edge will come with a set of stick caps, return button set, and a modified USB-C cable locking mechanism and braid. There’s also a carrying case, which not only holds the controller and its accessories, but also charges using USB inside the controller.
Sony didn’t provide a price or even a release date for the DualSense Edge. The company will release more details in the coming months.
