Celebrity stylist Kate Young has created some of the most iconic looks we’ve seen on the red carpet recently, and knows better than anyone how jewelry can provide the perfect finishing touch to a dazzling look. Fortunately, you no longer need a Hollywood star’s bank balance to benefit from the expertise of this self-proclaimed jewelry geek. The New York-based stylist used her own enviable collection of retro gadgets to create a collection with Monica Vinader. The hard-working creative pair were introduced by a mutual friend and moved into Zooming during lockdown, when a lack of travel and red carpet events meant they had time to work on a collection together.
Vinader said she knew from their first video call that it was a match made in heaven. “You say, ‘Wait a minute, I’m going to my safe.’ You literally turn around and start showing us your jewelry box with all your amazing collections — your antiques and things you love,” Vinard told Yang fashion in an exclusive conversation with
“I love fashion, but it might be so Ephemeral. Things that seem important can look really tiring after a year and a half. Jewelry doesn’t do that,” says Young, who lists Elsa Peretti as one of her favorite designers. One of the best things about awards season, she said, was seeing the look on the faces of new interns when they opened the diamond necklace for the first time. “They couldn’t believe their eyes – there was a magic in those rocks,” she said, laughing.

Mon ica Vinader X Kate Young Collection The Monica Vinader X Kate Young collection is inspired by a mix of vintage jewellery, modernist architecture and sculpture, as well as fashion of course . “At the moment, I’m really stuck with the kind of early 466 minimalism, which is Donna Karen/Armani-style modernism,” says Young. The result is a stylish sculptural mix of earrings, necklaces, bracelets and rings in high-lustre gold and silver, paired with a striking palette of lemon quartz and black and green onyx. Proving the timelessness of strong designs, Vinader credits her goldsmithing expertise with bringing the couple’s vision to life. “Simple, it turns out, is complicated!” she said with a laugh. A bracelet is perfect gold and black seamless curves. It can be worn alone or stacked with others. “With the all-gold bracelets, they look really small, but if you stack them in different colors, they become cool and conceptual,” says Young. Meanwhile, tennis necklaces, inspired by stylists’ love for pasty jewelry, can be layered to create your own neck mess.
