Universal Pictures’ Wicked movie, based on the hugely popular Broadway musical, promises to be the Thanksgiving film tradition.
Director Jon M. Chu and movie star, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande revealed on their respective social media on Tuesday Wicked Part Two In theaters starting December 26, 2025 to November 26, 2024, a Wednesday.
This movie doesn’t come as a surprise. In March, Universal Pictures and Filmmakers also moved up from December Wicked Part One to , 2024 to November , 2024.
Industry insiders said that releasing during Thanksgiving gives event films more time to attract audiences during the year-end holidays, and it is also beneficial from a consumer product perspective.
The star-studded cast also includes Michelle Yeoh – who made history earlier this year with an Academy Award for Best Actress – Jeff Goldblum , Jonathan Bailey and Ethan Slater.
The Wicked film, based on the best-selling novel by Gregory Maguire, written by the stage playwright Winnie Holzman and Oscar-winning composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz adapted for the screen. The Broadway stage musical is produced by Universal Stage Productions.
“Wicked is a proud part of our heritage,” Universal Pictures boss Donna Langley told theater owners at CinemaCon in late April, noting that the musical just became the fourth longest-running musical in Broadway history. “They is creating a world that I know will dazzle your screen.” Footage from the film was one of the highlights of the annual Exhibitors Conference.
Wicked, In Untold Tale of the Witch of Oz, Erivo plays Elphaba, a defiant society outcast Son, yet to discover her true power; Grande stars as Glinda, a popular young woman gilded by privilege and ambition who has yet to discover her true self.
As these two women form an unlikely sisterhood, they will empower each other in ways neither of them could have foreseen. But as dark forces of prejudice and oppression loom on the horizon, the choices they make will separate them and place them in separate destinies that will change them forever, and Oz too.
