It’s already been a big, football-filled year for Taylor Swift, but at the 2024 Grammy Awards on Sunday, the singer shifted the pop-cultural focus from her relationship with boyfriend Travis Kelce back to her music (where it arguably should have been all along, although I’m as guilty as the next person for stanning Traylor). As Swift got onstage to accept her Grammy for best pop vocal album for Midnights (her 13th!), she let the audience in on a secret: “My brand-new album comes out April 19th. It’s called The Tortured Poets Department.
“I’m gonna go and post the cover right now backstage. Thank you. I love you. Thank you,” Swift continued, heading offstage to do just that:
Swift, who wowed the crowd on the Grammys red carpet in arguably Reputations-coded Schiaparelli, is no stranger to the surprise album drop. She offered up news of her ninth studio album, Evermore, in the same fashion—online, with virtually no warning—although letting your fans know you’re coming out with new work mid-Grammys speech is certainly a whole new level of big reveal that only Swift (or Beyoncé, TBH) could pull off. Is it April yet?
