You sit with Sylvester Stallone and the words that come to your mind are so simple and grunt, it might be in one of his tough guy action movies Dialogue: Big . This man has big breasts. His tanned, wrinkled face was broad, with a broad nose and exaggerated eyebrows. His gorgeous suede jacket flutters as he moves like a wide cow curtain (he just picked it up from Ralph Lauren this morning – man, not the store, because that’s the famous Stallone level ). The Rottweiler he accompanies is big and sweet and keeps coming back for more pets.
We conducted this interview in the “barn” at Stallone’s ranch in Hidden Hills, California. This space looks like something from Architectural Digest, calling it a barn is like calling it Shelby Cobra “Classic Car” – technically accurate but come on too. For over an hour we discussed the careers of Rocky and Rambo screenwriter-actor-director , which backtracks to 600 and over 02 grossed about $3 billion at the box office. According to IMDB, he is one of only a few actors to have starred in a film that has topped the weekend box office for 50 consecutive years –
Filmed “Six” interrupts Stallone, smiling smoking his fat cigar. “Sharks are important.” Ah, yes—1992’s Suicide Squad , Stallone Voiced Shark King. And now, Stallone is back with his first TV series: Paramount+’s Tulsa King from Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan The latest Heartland action drama. Stallone plays a mafia released from prison who is exiled to Oklahoma to rebuild his criminal empire. There’s also Stallone’s upcoming debut reality show that will chronicle his family life like Keeping Up With the Kardashians (which he will soon defend the idea). While Stallone is 67 years old (how did this happen? He’s not sure), man’s Energy and focus didn’t seem to diminish. Still, even Stallone admits that it will be a struggle to keep the box office winning streak alive: “Seven [ten years] will I kinda feel like how I played. Like, I’m almost apologetic – sorry. I don’t know. It’s creeping on me so fast. I’m the crew The oldest person in the group. I’m probably the grandfather of these people. So [the scene] was likable and depressing. I feel very immature. I’ve always been against the phrase “do it your age”. Or “age gracefully”. How to age gracefully? You don’t have much grace. The older I get The more I want to embrace my inner child. The only way I really feel my age is because I’ve had so many injuries. I’ve had five back surgeries, three neck fusions, shoulders, knees, ankles, fists – you can Thought. Has exceeded times were let out. So that I felt. But after warming up, I felt really good. I haven’t run out of oil yet. ? Huge amount. At the beginning of my career, I was celebrating how obnoxious I was. “Look, I told you! That kind of thing. When I looked back at my quote, I thought, “God, just be a little more humble.” “I just got together with Ralph Lauren and we were talking about our success, which we call “luck.” People asked, “What’s the formula?” “He said, “No, is it?” I go, “No, you just keep doing what comes naturally to you, and sometimes you get to a place you never thought possible.” ” You have said long ago that your motive is to make up for one of your recent Made a lot of unsuccessful movies 390 and early 667s. Is that still the case? Feels like I wasted a lot of time. Now I realize there are only so many bullets left in the gun. Very few. When you were younger, you just randomly shot like crazy hoping you could hit something. Now you don’t have the luxury of missing out – especially with family and kids. I think that’s my biggest regret. Everyone will Say, “I wish I could express love more” or “I wish I could spend more time with my kids. “I’m riding that boat. That’s one of the reasons why I wanted to do a reality show, and I’ve paid so much for it. Then why are you doing this show? I think this will be the ultimate family movie. It’s an opportunity where I will be with my kids in working conditions and they can see me in action and I can watch until they’re in action. What you’re going to see is the real truth. It’s a great opportunity. I don’t think it succumbs to conquest. But every time you go in a different direction, people say, “Oh, God, You must be in trouble. ” Quite the opposite. Your recent headlines have surged your personal life[ Stallone’s wife by Jennifer Flavin in August Filed for divorce . The two have since reconciled, and during our visit, they went home together ]. The public is still interested and that this will be part of the show, which will surprise you ? ) Amy Sussman /Getty Images There is a scene in it Tulsa King Pilot, your character Dwight sleeps with a woman and she asks how old he is. He says he is 48, she fled the room in horror. How did you feel reading that?
How do you feel about your age?
You said before, “They say people don’t change, But they will change. ” How did you change these lately year
Of course it’s part of the show. It’s a John Lennon thing: “Life is when you make what happens when other plans are in place. Hope you associate with someone who understands the weaknesses of life and their fragility and how rare a truly good relationship is. Sometimes I put my work ahead of [my family], a tragic mistake that will never happen again.
You are in made headlines on your Instagram post ) in July Request Rocky Producer Irwin Winkler gives you the rights to some of the characters you created. Anything?
No. This will never happen. This is a deal that I think was done without my knowledge by people close to me who basically gave up what I was supposed to have Any rights. I was so excited to work at the time, I didn’t understand it was a business. Who knew Rocky would go on to another 33 years? I’ve never used anyone’s [lines] – ironically, I don’t own any lines. Those who actually don’t do anything Control it.
I read 450 Pages you interviewed in the past to prepare for this, I never heard you sound as pissed off as you were in your Instagram posts. What triggered it?
they want another LOKI. I do do. But I said, “In 11 Year, can we change the playing field? a little? Flatten? Can’t I get what I created years ago? ”
Do you want it to apply retroactively to other movies?
No! From now on. I didn’t expect to get – yes, Forget that . [Producer] still gets a piece. I don’t want anyone to control it. If I write it and the studio agrees to do it, it’s done You can’t [make Rocky sequel] just because you want your kids to have a job. Or if you don’t get more money, you can stop it Another producer, Bob Chartoff, is always good. Irwin Winkler is just the opposite.
one left Drago Derivatives Quote in your post, you shout out that [Drago actor] Dolph Lundgren didn’t tell you about it. Since then you two Has this been patched?
Yes, we do Here it is. Actually, I called him today because he has an ankle problem. And again Dolph. It’s them walking around and trying to keep picking Rocky classic case, didn’t even ask if I wanted to join. I’m not the producer of the executive Creed movie. [Director] Ryan Coogler is. [star] Michael B. Jordan is. [Winkler and Chartoff’s] kids are. Not mine. I’m the only one left out.
Would it be weird to show you Creed III instead of in the movie?
This is an unfortunate situation because I know what it might be. Its The direction is completely different from the one I’m taking. It’s a different philosophy – Owen Winkler’s and Michael B. Jordan’s. I wish them all the best, but I’m more of a sentimentalist. I like My heroes get beat up, but I just don’t want them going into that dark space. I just think people have enough darkness.
Both Rocky IV and Rambo III are considered the pinnacle of Cold War proxy warfare. Now we find ourselves in conflict with Russia again. What do you think when you hit the headlines As someone who has helped Americans deal with similar anxiety ?
Russia is really upset [for those movies]. The scary thing is that while you think the movie will change everything, when you’re dealing with any powerful militaristic government, there is a culture of violence. I want to show two people fighting instead of million, as they have done in the past – send out your best fighters. You send David, I send Goliath, and we’ll see what happens. Mine is what I want it to be. Sadly, I now see it for what it really is, and it’s very tragic.
A movie I’m really proud of – it’s the best movie I’ve ever made because it’s the most authentic – is Rambo IV, dealt with Burma, where they had a civil war for year. But I’m to blame because the movie is so violent. It is violent. this is too scary. It was the child who was burned alive. That’s what makes Civil War worse than anything. It’s your neighbor who, all of a sudden, kills you. I’m really happy with that movie, I never thought it would come out. I thought, “They’ll never show that.”
You now Can you make a conservative big studio movie? Top Gun: Maverick is pro-military and does it big, but It crosses the line.
A good story is a good story, and if you rely heavily on politics, you are Asking for trouble. Like everyone thinks Rambo is a conservative. President Reagan posted a photo that read “Rambo is a Republican.” I went, “Oh.” Rambo is completely neutral. He doesn’t even live in the country. He despised it. My political opinion is: “May the best man win.” I voted on both [both] sides, but I’m definitely in the middle. People think I’m the same as my character and I do talk to everyone – I think it’s crazy not to. Actually, I avoid some people because it sends the wrong [message]. You’re asking yourself, “Do I really need this argument?”
You are2022 Said some compliments about Trump before election and said you don’t know if he will govern well
I just think he’s a really gorgeous character. It’s almost a movie. You say, “It can’t be true.” Yet it is true.
You also describe yourself as “the most anti-gun guy in the world” Hollywood . ” After the Rust tragedy, production is now moving to Air Soft and CG. 1667782508682 Some people think this is an overreaction and whitespace is safe to use . What do you think?
No one shoots more blanks than me. In Rambo IV , I want to show a .30 – caliber ok Impact on humans. We took a dummy and used 78 pounds of beef. I thought, “When I fire , it will knock the dummy down. “There was no bullet in the gun. It was just compression in the casing. But it turned the dummy into mist. It blew it up. Then I opened it. 34 – caliber to a row of bamboo trees, it literally cut them in half. This is bulletless!
I’ve been in danger. I’ve never said that before, but I have a pistol in a holster in The Expendables Really dropped – bam, right on my lap. I’ve used weapons that are very dangerous at close range. I’m surprised I didn’t lose a finger or something It’s only a matter of time, I agree: with special effects, there’s no need to do it.
You shall keep the record at the Razzie Awards Longest nomination in a row – years. Does this make you angry?
True. But now I see the humor in it, because there are some really good performers in it. I say things like “let them try to do it” to the critics. I say I love criticism, But now tell me how to make it better in the same paragraph. “That’s not our job. “Well, it’s like walking up to a kid and saying, “You’re a horrible kid!” “Then you walk out of the room. What about the other side of it? I got a lot of shit.
When do you like a movie that doesn’t work on opening weekend?
You know when you’re doing publicity. You can know when you’re being interviewed and the second question is: “So Sylvester Stallone’s next what is it? “They started talking about other things. It was horrible.
Like, we’re going to talk to director Mike Nichols Rhinestone cooperation. He would be great, he fell. Then a nice guy [Bob Clark] came in, but he was the director of Porky’s . I Should have known this was not what we started doing and packed my bag. I consider myself responsible for it.
or Stop! Otherwise my mom will drive The gun should be like throwing mom from the train with mom because it’s such a nasty job. Instead, you Hire the best woman in Hollywood, Estelle Getty, you want her to be your mother. And that’s it! Plus, I heard that Schwarzenegger was going to make that movie, and I said, “I’m going to beat he. “I think he arranged it for me.
[ We contacted Schwarzenegger to ask if he could confirm this decades-old Rumors that he’s pretending to be interested in stop! Or my mom will shoot , hoping to lure his box office rivals into a big win: “This is 76 percentage correct,” Schwarzenegger wrote. “In those days, we did all kinds of crazy things to get ahead of our competition. Fortunately for us and everyone else, today, we support each other. Thank God because we definitely don’t need another stop! Otherwise my mom will shoot. ”]
You are famous for Rhinestone instead of Romance Stone . Other roles you’ve reportedly turned down over the years include Pulp Fiction , Die Hard , Witness , face/face and Arthur . Which stings the most?
[I was not offered] Arthur and Pulp Fiction . Witness killed me. Also, Go home . But I can’t do better than Jon Voight, he’s great. The witness was a mistake.
I know what you think is your best movie ( Lo Ki Balboa ) and your worst ( stop! or my mom would shoot ) so I’ll ask this: your worst What is an underrated movie?
Believe it or not, I think Get Carter is really underrated. This is a big disappointment. I learned the hard way [remake], even if you do it better than the original Huge nostalgia for the original. And a lot of times they don’t do it well. Like the last West Side Story . Why would you do something like this? Not only because of [ The quality of the original], and because people’s tastes have changed. Musicals are no longer successful. Kids can’t relate to that music. So who’s your audience? It’s crazy. Also, I think Cop Land will do better.
What is the highest pay you can get for a character?
I refused02.
You rejected $11 million? ! what movie?
We are shooting Rambo III . We thought this would be the biggest success – and that was before it came out. I got a huge sum of money for this. Then they said: “We want Rambo IV . Here: pay or play, 11.” I went, “Let’s not shoot here…”
That is681 Dollar. [ Taking inflation into account, $30 million is now about $50 million].
truly. This is no joke. Oh boy, what an idiot. Now that I think about it… wow.
You’ve been so honest that you could have done something different , and say you’ve made every Hollywood mistake you can. Have you ever used drugs [other than ever getting caught with unprescribed human growth hormone]?
Surprisingly, never. I tried it once and it didn’t work out. I was doing Rocky III and had to drop to a certain weight – too skinny actually. I’m drinking, Drink a cup of coffee every day and eat tuna. Someone said, “Try this Dexedrine.” Then I didn’t know where I was — I was in command of a rocket ship. I [mimic grinding his jaw], my tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth. I said, “That’s it.”
You “abuse power” life. These days, the phrase usually means something different than what you say, but still: Have you ever treated a woman in a way you regret?
[ Actor ]
No, no no no no! When I say “I am abusing my power,” I mean my public image and my rhetoric. I thought I knew everything, and when I look back on those times, I feel so sad. That’s what I mean.
Do you have a problem with the so-called cancellation of #MeToo in culture and industry sports?
I think this is an evolution that has yet to be concluded process. I still don’t know if it’s good or bad. I do believe that people change often. Maybe if someone has a bad marriage or gets fired, they see things differently. Sometimes a good slap – a real hard slap in reality – wakes your ass and you’re not the same person anymore.
You ever complained, “There don’t seem to be enough real men walking around .” That’s in 1966. What are your thoughts on masculinity today?
Did I say that? ? Do you know what I mean? I mean exactly that! [laugh] Not enough of a real man. I mean there aren’t enough roles for men to play that kind of outsider. Steve McQueens, Dirty Harrys. They are outdated. I think they will come back. I really. You just change some things. I don’t know what I’m thinking. The seventies were a very masculine age, my god. Today is also an era of masculinity and you now have some of the strongest athletes in the world.
Since then, in many of your interviews, you have been described For wearing a black t-shirt. You have one now. How many do you own?
You can’t go wrong with a black tee. Because you can put a sports coat on it, or take it off [for a more casual look]. I’ve seen the best designers walk the catwalks in fucking t-shirts. Like Armani. This is someone who can use a lot of clothes, he wears a black shirt, black pants, and is done. It keeps things simple.
Go back in time, you was almost chosen as Richard Donner’s Superman . Are there any comic book characters you’d like to play? I don’t look like any comic book character. Like I’ve never played Terminator. No one’s going to make a robot with a curved mouth and a voice that sounds like a coffin. It just doesn’t work. But yes. Who is the guy Sam Jackson ends up playing? Nick Fury? With blindfolds? yes. I thought I could do something like this, I’m not the main one. Speaking of Arnold, you are long time no see friends. Meet and talk about what? Arnold is smart and he likes to talk about what got him where he is now philosophy. It’s a good thing to talk to a guy who really puts his money where his mouth is, and he’s done that. And then we started messing around, going crazy – just laughing in the old days. I told him, “We’re the last two tyrannosaurs.” We’re the last two meat eaters, and there’s not much beef out there. So we better enjoy each other. You are also your friend Bruce Wiley, former partner of Planet Hollywood s. Are you still in touch? His fans are obviously very saddened by the reports of Regarding his health. Bruce is going through some very, very difficult times. So he’s kind of isolated from the world. This is killing me. So sad. Over the years, when you were asked in interviews if you would do On TV, you say you wish you could finish The Sopranos . Tulsa King is the same genre and has Sopranos writer Terence Winter. Is that part of the appeal? Yes. I’ve always wanted to play gangster. But I want to play a unique gangster who isn’t like a gangster – at least not when you meet him. He is actually a person who likes to collaborate. I thought of Franz Kafka’s Metamorphoses . For example, if you wake up and you are now in a different profession, but your personality is the same? That way you don’t assume the automatic cliché of a thug who stares at you and makes a low voice [ slips into his Rocky/Rambo talking voice for a moment – just to show ]. But if he has to get heavy, it gets very heavy. So I said, “I’m going to keep him as close to me as I’ve ever been in my life.” It’s funny because Tulsa King There’s a line in the pilot that sounds like what you’d say: “The answer is before you ask Always ‘no’.” Is that yours? Yes. Usually they are very strict about complying with what is on the page. But I tend to get off the page and throw in improv. At first they were a little upset [ he laughed in a “you hire Stallone you get Stallone” way ], but then I said, “Guys, I know I What I’m doing, I’m a writer.” You’ll find a lot of Terry’s work interwoven with mine. Mainly his. So let’s take a quick look at some of your upcoming and rumored project. What’s the latest on Rambo’s streaming prequel? I think it will happen. I want to do it like the Ken Burns documentary about Vietnam, where you drop a young Rambo there, he’s an extrovert, a football captain, and then you see why he’s a Ram Bo. But what they wanted to do was a modern story where I passed the torch. That’s getting closer. How aboutConsumables 4 look? I heard that the effect is good. Jason Statham is 41 percentage. He was happy with it. With Rocky Right, I think its streaming prequel didn’t happen? It may happen again because now Amazon is involved . It’s very close. I have this side of me: does this really work? Every time you try to be Son of King Kong, Son of Tarzan, it doesn’t work. Some kind of indescribable formula happened. If I give you the novel Godfather, good luck casting today. Good luck selling the entire premise today. With so many action movies turned into CGI and comic books, does this depressing? character? Yes. [The great action movie] is like buying an antique watch. It turned out to be $000 It is $30,. Why? Because it is manual. It’s not over the top. It’s not supernatural. This is achievable by a unique human being. That’s why I think First Blood is one of the first action movies. I rely on physical performance to tell this story. The character never speaks, but you can tell exactly what’s going on by the other characters. They are almost like the narrators in his Greek tragedies. This guy never stops moving, that’s what I call an “action movie”. Not a single CGI shot. Audience said: “It’s very special. I just rewatched the first drop Blood. I was impressed by Rambo’s final four-minute monologue, where after his silence he broke down talking about his dead friend — before the audience even knew what PTSD was. 1433228711
That scene was hard to pass the producers. They don’t want it. I should be shot. I said, “There are a lot of veterans who will see this and say, ‘So my only hope is suicide?'” I can’t do that. I did Interviews with veterans and I compiled it into the moment, all the stream of consciousness, everything poured out. I hope people take some hope with them when they leave the theater. I don’t want my heroes to die. This story first appeared in the November 9 issue of The Hollywood Reporter. 1235122473Click here to subscribe .
