Next Goal Wins brings first trailer to CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Wednesday piece.
Taika Waititi’s football feature film is based on the 2014 documentary of the same name about the American Samoa national football team and Led by Dutch coach Thomas Rongen, they rose from underdogs to winners as they attempted to become a FIFA World Cup qualifier team.
Trailer opens with ABBA’s “Take a Chance on Me” as Michael Fassbender’s Rongen gets fired and sent to American Samoa to find a new job. His work was done, as the team fell flat and failed to score a single goal.
While filmmaker Waititi is an Oscar winner, marketers choose to focus on his loss – including Thor: Ragnarok Teen Choice Award. After all, a success story is much more satisfying if it comes from a failure.
Cast also includes Will Arnett, Elisabeth Moss, David Finn, Beulah Köhler, Oscar Kately and Leahy Faraipapalangi. Searchlight has a movie release date of November .
This marks Fassbender’s first big screen role since 2014 when he was Protagonist of X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Waititi was last released in theaters with Thor: Love and Thunder , Marvel Studios’ film released last year.
