Netflix is heading west.
The streaming giant has placed an order for a six-episode series American Primeval, starring Taylor Kitch and Executive Producer Peter Berg starring in the limited series Friday Night Lights ) and Eric Newman ( drug lord ).
Described as an ensemble drama, Netflix describes the series as “a raw, adventurous exploration of the birth of the American West. A violent clash of cultures, religions and communities, as men and women struggle to control this new Fight and die for the world—the land they truly believe is their destiny. [The series] tells a story about the sacrifices all must make when they choose to enter the lawless and untamed wilderness.”
Kitsch will play Isaac, a traumatized man who struggles to overcome his inner demons and find a reason to live in this cruel and punishing world.
Mark L. Smith(The Revenant) will write all six episodes and executive produce with Newman and Berg the series. The latter will direct all six episodes through his movie 44 banner with Netflix’s first subscription rights. American Primeval is the newest series, stemming from Newman’s own overall deal, his Grand Electric Banner & Streamer, added to the Narcos, spin-off Narcos: Mexico, feature Project Power, Kevin Hart Thriller True Story, Science Fiction Spider-Man and Ryan Murphy’s Observer. Next, Newman will produce Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon and a Netflix limited series Painkiller, Berg directs and Kitsch stars. The series will be launched next year. American Original Paramount Network’s Taylor Sheridan to helm Westerns Yellowstone, , starring Kevin Costner, continues to set ratings records and find new viewers with a streaming deal with Peacock. Yellowstone ‘s success led Sheridan to create the so-called “Dutton-verse”, which included multiple spinoffs of the hit series, while also reviving interest in the genre in the West.
Kitsch credits include Friday Night Lights, The Terminal List, True Detective and Normal Heart.
