If anything Rona Bar and Ofek Avshalom’s If photography is so recognizable, it’s their intimate and poignant portraiture of the human experience. Also known as Fotómetro, the two are artistically life partners. Through the projects they co-lead, which primarily feature gender- and age-diverse non-model actors, they strive to make invisible visible by observing the infinite facets of global communities that span the world.
In their latest series “Tell Me Where Your Freedom Is”, Bar and Avshalom turns to their cameras to explore their subjects’ enduring quest for self-expression and identity. Include a set of images taken during the last shot months, the new production walks through the doors of its protagonist’s home, offering viewers an exclusive, candid glimpse into their journey of self-discovery. In this series, the Tel Aviv (moved to London) photography duo frame individuals of all ages and walks of life in the personal spaces they create for themselves.
“We felt that capturing subjects in their clothes and space could give a glimpse into their hearts,”
Rhona Barr and Ofik Afshalom said. Talking about their focus on the unique characteristics of their subjects—whether it’s tattoos, the clothing they choose for the shoot, or objects from everyday life—the pair explained that all the choices we make help shape who we are, whether Either consciously or unconsciously.
at its core, “Tell me where your freedom is” is a fascinating portrait of humanity. Through Bar and Avshalom’s own empathetic, honest gaze, a kaleidoscope of life and its different stages can be seen.
