Temperley London Fall 2023 Ready-to-Wear Collection

Alice Temperley was in good spirits during her preview at Somerset House, where she will host an event to launch her interior design collaboration project. While the space is furnished to proper Temperley standards—think textured leopard-print wallpaper and a loveseat, floor-to-ceiling floral drapes in a step-and-repeat—the designer also brought in railings from her latest collection. “I wanted a few people to see the clothes up close — it was important for them to be able to touch everything,” she said.

The British designer, long committed to her country west-inspired bohemian vibe, her fall collection draws from female surrealist artists Kati Horna, Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo as well as patterns from Mexico City and Frida Kahlo’s Blue House. This season, texture is a key component of clothing, and Temperley offers a variety of styles: wool coats and crepe-back satin kimonos, adorned with delicate hand-woven and pearlescent embellishments, as well as sheer paneled mini and midi styles embellished with sequins, florals and trompe l’oeil lace dresses. Her references are also reflected in the colours, including vivid sky blues, scarlets and rhododendrons.

The black and moss green single-breasted velvet suit was nearly perfectly tailored, and it felt extraordinarily high when it was well tailored. As for evening wear? There were several highlight moments, including a feather-light, crystal-encrusted lavender dress with silver tassels, and bridal looks, which included a hand-embroidered floor-length ivory gown paired with an Old Hollywood glamour. A white faux fur coat. Temperley, of course, had the coat on while we were talking. “If I see it, I have to wear it,” she exclaims. Her loyal customers are sure to have a similar reaction.
