The Little Mermaid Trailer Starring Halle Bailey Off the assembly line earlier this week, just hours after Terrence Zhou made a mermaid crawl down the runway during New York Fashion Week debut for his label Bad Binch TongTong. Over the past few months, Zhou has made waves in New York with his signature buoyant and balloon-like silhouettes — and perhaps most importantly, on Instagram. No wonder his work has gone viral on several occasions: his technique is unique, although his shape and style give a lovely familiarity. But most importantly, his work is extremely memetic. It’s interesting. It has the sophistication and conceptual chic that industry types tend to like, while also having a naive humour.

This Chinese New York designer is number one The first time he applied to Parsons, he was rejected, so he went to college in Indiana to study mathematics. He eventually reapplied to Parsons and was accepted, but he kept math in his pocket, and now it’s clear it’s coming in handy. His work can be fun, loud, and, quite literally, take up space, but it’s also an ambitious technical feat. The first time I saw his work was through a viral Instagram video showing one of his circular sculptural dresses and what was the first word that came to my mind?

Zhou himself learned Latin ballroom dancing when he was young, so dancing, he said by phone the day after the show, felt like the most appropriate way to showcase his collection. “I have these creatures in my head, and I don’t think the traditional runway will do them justice,” he said. “A model walking the runway with a dead face is too far from my job.” Zhou also hopes his audience will experience more than what they see online, this intersection of traditional dance and fashion Through his fantastical creatures and humorous blend.

Zhou used this show as a “spiritual autobiography performance” to examine his own life projection. He explores his emotions through lifelike otherworldly creatures, which he sends down the runway with an inflatable green head modeled after his own face. “It’s a joke for people to take themselves so seriously,” he said. Likewise, towards the end of the show, Zhou sent two models onto the runway, wearing vertiginous heels and tight dresses, to take selfies with his creature in the background. It’s a cheeky nod to the self-obsessed Instagram culture, he says, but perhaps to ourselves, his guests, who can’t stop recording the show as “content,” and maybe even to the self-documenting life and work that on social media.
His goal is to become meta with performance. “In the beginning it’s beautiful and elegant and people don’t laugh, but then it’s kind of funny and then there’s something emotional to take away,” he said. “I wanted it to be a layered cake, with different flavors in every aspect of the show.” Indeed, after the show, everyone had a different opinion of what it was about, but all agreed on how emotional it was.

Weeks demonstrate the interconnectedness of mutual attraction and repulsion balloon shape. There was also a bright green butterfly flying around, a pair of octopuses chasing a lantern, and a swarm of spiders hopping back and forth. In the end, his actor slowly made his way through a bouncy tunnel that formed a quirky shape. Zhou has no reservations about challenging the definition of wearability or the relationship between fashion and the body, perhaps because he also has a burgeoning ready-to-wear business in Asia. He says it’s not just celebrities who wear his clothes (though he’s already worn the likes of Olivia Rodrigo, Lorde and Camila Cabello).
