    What is tinted sunscreen?

“A tinted sunscreen is a product that primarily has SPF, with added pigments for light to medium makeup coverage,” explains esthetician and Wildling co-founder Britta Plug. “This is especially useful for mineral sunscreens that leave a white shade, and the pigments help harmonize the physical sunscreen with your individual skin tone.”

She goes on to explain that the difference between tinted sunscreen and tinted moisturizer with SPF is actually semantic—think of it as a spectrum, not distinct categories. In her view, it really depends on the main function of the product. “Is it formulated primarily to hydrate and hydrate the skin, but does it also have SPF as an added bonus? Or is it primarily an SPF sunscreen with some moisturizing ingredients added for a dewy finish, or to counteract some of the dryness from mineral SPF?” B’s broad-spectrum coverage,” guides dermatologist Marisa Garshick, MD. “In many cases, the color may come from iron oxide, which has also been shown to provide protection against high-energy visible light (also known as blue light), which can be especially helpful for some people dealing with hyperpigmentation.”

Think of this as a tinted version of your favorite face SPF. That being said, Garshik notes that it does provide adequate UV protection, but be sure to use enough of the formula. Her rule of thumb? Apply the length of two fingers to the face and neck. Dermatologist Dr. Joyce Park echoes these sentiments and shares some final insights: The best sunscreen for you is the one you actually use! “
