Following a hiatus last year, the Golden Globes return tonight in Beverly Hills, California, honoring the year’s best performances in film and television. Before the ceremony, however, Hollywood’s A-listers hit the red carpet in droves. Celebrities celebrated the start of awards season with a mix of traditional glamour, fresh and innovative styles.
More feminine styles feature eye-popping shades, sequins or embellishments. Even factoring in the absence of former creative director Alessandro Michele, Gucci still had a considerable influence on the red carpet. Michelle Williams’ frothy white dress with lavish ruffles struck just the right balance between exaggeration and sophistication; so did Julia Garner’s pink gown, which had ruffles. Leafy hem. Anya Taylor-Joy’s bright yellow Dior look, consisting of a satin bra top and floor-length skirt, felt modern and timeless. Michelle Yeoh, who won the Best Actress in a Movie Award, also shined in Armani’s sequined waist.
Meanwhile, tonight’s men had fun fashion adventures. Actor Jeremy Pope wore a classic Dolce & Gabbana suit—though it was covered in black leather for a youthful vibe. In an orange single-breasted suit from Zegna, Andrew Garfield also proved that tailoring can still be fun and make a statement. Host Jerrod Carmichael continued the vibe as he kicked off the show in a pink satin suit.
