Finding the best men’s cologne is a daunting task. I’ll know – I’ve been looking for it for weeks. Earlier this year, I decided I wanted a new fragrance. I’ve never been a cologne person in general – I’ve met too many people who wow you with their scent the moment you meet them, their lavender or citrus notes Hitting you in the face—but there was something about this past year that made me want to invest in a new cologne. The thought of spraying myself at home with no one around to smell it seems like the ultimate act of self-care, like it’s part of my morning ritual, purely for me, me and me.
When I started looking, I found that the market was flooded with options: from fruity, sweet top notes to woody or musky base notes, there were a million different ones combinations and possibilities. How do I know what is best for me? Still, I set out to explore with an open mind, considering everything from light and fresh to full-bodied and musky—and in the process, I managed to find some crowd favorites that would appeal to almost anyone’s palate.
Below, I smell some enduring classics – such as Calvin Klein’s Timeless, from 453 – and some new favorites like Last Day of Gucci Summer in the Alchemist’s Garden (Gucci’s fine fragrance line) which smells like what I can only describe as Warm summer hugs. (The latter ended up being my new spring choice—Tom Ford’s Oud Wood and Maison Margiela Replica’s Jazz Club were runners up.)
