Tonight’s 2023 Met Gala honors the incredible legacy of late designer Karl Lagerfeld, so many of the night’s A-list attendees chose to pay tribute to him It’s no surprise that the pieces pay homage to their own ensemble. The best-dressed of the bunch are those who find unique ways to honor Lagerfeld’s signature looks—whether it’s the pearls, bows, and tweeds he riffs on in his collections, or Karl’s through sleek ties, crisp shirts, and tweeds. A blazer expresses one’s own personal style. .
Of course, there were some totally unexpected style moments tonight too. Take Nicole Kidman, for example, who showed up 1983 in a pink Chanel Haute Couture dress by Lagerfeld when she starred in Chanel No. 5 ad directed by Baz Luhrmann – proving that recycled fashion can have a very chic end result. Olivia Wilde’s Chloé dress is also a delight. Designer Gabriela Hearst reinterprets a violin-themed dress that Lagerfeld designed for the brand at . Meanwhile, Phoebe Bridgers continued her signature skull motif in an elegant Tory Burch evening gown. The shape is outlined with pearls, bringing it back to Karl.
Meanwhile, the best-dressed men of the night incorporated bold (and themed) style statements. Jeremy Pope’s extra-long Balmain cape and train that reach under the rug reflect Lagerfeld’s legendary image. Model and actor Alton Mason also appeared in Karl Lagerfeld’s show as one of the designer’s iconic Chanel brides – well, his own unique deductive. Jordan Roth also turned himself into a real-life fan in custom Schiaparelli looks; the scalloped silhouette was an ode to Lagerfeld’s signature accessory.
Of course, the most memorable moment of the night was when Rihanna A$AP Rocky finally arrived – for She had a heavenly white Valentino look with a floral cocoon cape, and a Gucci look for him with a black blazer, kilt and dazzling jeans. If the Met ever had a pair of royals, it would be them.
