Sarah Burton’s tenure at Alexander McQueen comes to a close today in Paris, as the creative director bids farewell to the brand with the spring 2024 show.
Burton has spent the entirety of her 26-year career at the British fashion house. She joined in 1996 as an intern while a fashion student at Central Saint Martins, and was appointed head of womenswear in 2000. She then took the helm shortly after Lee McQueen’s death in 2010. Since assuming the top job, she’s outfitted the world’s biggest stars in her designs—breaking through with Kate Middleton’s 2011 wedding gown—all while working to maintain the integrity of the brand’s namesake designer and still creating work that was true to her vision.
It’s safe to say that Burton has done just that during her time at Alexander McQueen. In 2011, she was awarded Designer of the Year by the British Fashion Council, and in 2012 she was appointed Officer to the Order of the British Empire for her contributions to fashion.
While she’s remained a longtime favorite of the Princess of Wales, Burton has also dressed the upper echelons of Hollywood: Beyoncé, Timothée Chalamet, Lady Gaga, and Zendaya are among the stars who have worn her designs. Below, take a look back at some of Burton’s most memorable celebrity looks during her residence at Alexander McQueen.
