The mood at Balenciaga is somber as Demna ushers in a return to craftsmanship. The hair is just right toned down: avoiding height or volume, it’s either slicked back or painted and sleek. Elsewhere, at Alexander McQueen, Sarah Burton recreates the ’90’ years with anatomical precision and deep grace. To complement this, the hair is either brushed into intricate waves in the front or tied up and glossy in the back.

Goth girls do it better. At least that’s the story of Givenchy, with soft shadow around the eyes. At Dior, makeup creative and image director Peter Philips also came up with his reinvention of the smoky eye, with a more deconstructed iteration. “It’s a powerful look,” says Philips. “It’s beautiful up close, but it’s important to see it from a distance because the runway is huge.” Elsewhere, Rick Owens made oval black shapes around the eyes and some Weird black contact lenses make things eerie.
