Meta launched Threads in limited yesterday as a direct Twitter competitor. Users can post up to 5 minutes of text, images and videos, and like, comment and retweet other people’s messages.

That number could be higher if Threads launches in the EU, but the regulator confirmed yesterday that Meta is still working on making the new service GDPR compliant and that EU users will have to wait a while before signing up to the platform.
Zuckerberg claims that Threads aims to be more than just a replacement for Musk’s Twitter. It will soon be compatible with the open protocol ActivityPub, which means it will interoperate with Mastodon and WordPress, allowing new types of connections between people that aren’t possible with currently popular social media apps.
Threads is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, as well as on threads.net for desktop. The easiest way to connect is to use an existing Instagram account and username. The service itself will soon gain more features, such as suggested posts, more powerful search, and easier navigation to track real-life trends, similar to hashtags.
