If you have built any type of house in the past In the gym for a few years, you know that not every adjustable dumbbell is created equal.
From click-and-slide models to old-fashioned irons that use counterweight plates, most have their pros and cons. We decided to test the Gungnir Dumbler ($499 per pair), a top-of-the-line pair of dumbbells that bring a new twist to a classic construction, to see if this weight plate-loadable dumbbell lives up to the buzz, or is the best for your money spend elsewhere.
“This is a loadable adjustable dumbbell that allows you to slip on these using your existing Olympic board with 2″ holes , create any dumbbell size you want,”
The built-in mechanics themselves are a big win here. “A lot of the concern I’ve always had with weight-bearing Olympic dumbbells is that they’re very dependent on the collar,” says Otey. “So, if you’re going to end up doing curls or presses, or whatever type of weight you’re moving, and the plate has to be facing down, you’re really going to be relying on the collar that holds the plate in there to make sure you can actually sustain it , and it doesn’t slip.”
He adds that another benefit of this design is that you can use what is already available in the gym equipment, so you don’t have to buy an entire rack to hold a lot of weight. Otey also really likes the product’s high-quality materials and clean finish, emphasizing that “the processing is very different from any other weight-bearing dumbbell you’ve got; the mechanism’s ability to move back and forth is unlike any dumbbell you’ve ever seen.”
It’s not all roses and stainless steel, though. The stickers on this product are punchy and “relatively tedious to try and change the weight,” so you’ll have to spend some time between sets.
Another downside? Manipulating two dumbbells with heavier loads is difficult. The Dumbler’s maximum weight is 264 pounds, but Otey found the most comfortable way to load these dumbbells was 75 pounds. Auxiliary movements like bicep curls and triceps stretches can also produce a lot of clanging.
If you want to know if we give Gungnir Dumbler MH strong seal of approval, plus who we think this product is best for, you’ll have to watch the video to find out.
