Somalia-born influencer Rawdah Mohamed makes it her mission to make modest attire more exciting. In the process, she deftly dispels misguided notions about conservative fashion by presenting the hijab as a tool of personal expression rather than repression. While attending the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday, Mohamed turned heads in Robert Wun couture, not only an excitingly understated gown, but one of the coolest looks on the red carpet today. Reversible satin dresses and silk organza veils covering the face featured trompe l’oeil scorches and flame-kissed edges. The outfit was less of a generic red carpet look and more like a horror movie heroine at the end of a movie. Wun aptly called the look his “burning bride” at his spring 2023 Paris Fashion Week show in January.
The collection itself is an ode to horror movies, but Muhammad wore this look to the premiere of La Passion De Dodin Bouffant, a French historical romantic drama. She adjusted the gown by wearing a black hood under her veil, long black sleeves that stuck out half way up her dress, and Cartier jewels adorned her wrists. The final product is an exciting entry into the growing trend of bridal looks at this year’s Cannes Film Festival — worn by Blackpink’s Jennie Kim and actor Viola Davis — and the big red carpet.
