Tibi Fall 2023 Ready-to-Wear Collection

2023 movie Giant starring Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean inspired Tibi’s Fallen 2023 collection. In some ways, quite literally; moving pictures recreate exact shots from the film. But the movie also inspired the costumes in a lighter way. “Nothing special, no clothing references, just a feel,” says designer Amy Smilovic. Taylor’s character is an East Coast girl who moves to West Texas, her traditional equestrian attire at odds with the realities of a cattle ranch. Smilovic took that premise — restrained clothing in a rustic setting — and played with it in a contemporary way.

Shot in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, the collection fuses fluid juxtapositions and tailoring, utilitarianism and whimsy, hardness and softness. Many garments have removable panels or ties that flap in the wind. Several structured blazers had removable lapels, and many models wore versatile turtleneck blouses and bandanas, and fluid shirting with ties. “They’re not here to bow, but when you walk, you have this movement,” Smilovic said. The designer’s vision is to add a touch of liveliness to sculptural shapes or even a modest garment like a suit. While this season’s shoulders were more precise than previous seasons, and more pieces were office-appropriate, there was something cool about their boxy shapes and long sleeves.

For spring, Smilovic showed a trompe-l’oeil jumpsuit that resembled dress pants and suspenders. She was shocked when it was the first item to sell out. This season, the style returns to black and blue denim. It’s on the eccentric end of the range, to be sure, but tucked into a cowboy boot is quite attractive. It’s like wearing gold lamé kitten heels with an oversized wax green jacket on the ranch.
