Trey Lance's preseason ends after 3-game series with Houston

Trey Lance’s preseason finale has gotten better, but mostly lackluster. He finished 7-of-11 for 49 yards on three scoreless drives. He finished 6-of-7 on 1-of-4 shooting.

The raw numbers are not bad, especially considering the play of the offensive line. The absence of any of the 49ers’ starting offensive tackles shows that. Houston’s defensive line dominated the run, and Lance was besieged on nearly every retreat.

The silver lining of all the pressure is that Lance does a good job of avoiding the pass sprint a few times to avoid negative play.

The bad news is that Lance’s inaccuracy has been shown several times. He missed a couple of tough throws on the run, missed a couple of “layups,” and finished a couple of throws where no yardage was allowed after a catch.

There’s also a nice long shot for Deebo Samuel, but it’s not complete. But the ball is still good.

Overall, it was an insane effort to understand because the offensive line was so bad. Accuracy issues could haunt Lance all year, though. Whether that improves remains to be seen, but it will be up to head coach Kyle Shanahan to find the throws that Lance is good at and get him into the throws.

Drive to Chicago and the 49ers will have to live with the bad things that Lance has to offer.
