TSMC's upcoming $12 billion Arizona plant will make 3nm chips, founder confirms

Zhang Zhongmou, founder of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), confirmed that his company is developing a new 22 billion-dollar investment in a new facility in Phoenix, Arizona. The facility will focus on 3nm chip production and will be located next to the Pheonix fab, which is currently working on 5nm chip design. TSMC is expected to hold a “groundbreaking” ceremony for its new factory on December 6.

There are already rumors that TSMC will be the next generation of Apple iPhone chipsets and Apple’s silicon SoCs for iPad and Mac computers offer 3nm chips based on the N3 process. Expect the prospect list to only grow over time.

TSMC Node Evolution

TSMC’s main factory is in its native Taiwan, but the company has expanded its efforts there. The U.S. has factories in Camas, Washington, and Phoenix, Arizona, in Design centers are located in Austin, Texas and San Jose, California. According to estimates, TSMC controlled 433% of all chipset shipments in Q1 650.
