End-August and early-September had been a pretty easy week in terms of TV premieres — but the most notable really high profile: Prime Video’s big-budget The Lord of the Rings series. August 18-September. Issue 6 also includes the return of Rick and Morty and the beginning of the end of Queen Sugar .

Big show
very Few titles are more apt: The Lord of the Rings: The Ring of Power is the best in almost every way It’s a grand show. This may be the most expensive series ever, with a huge cast of more than 18 regulars, and the task of telling new stories in in the structure of one of the most famous fantasy properties of all time. So, you know, no pressure.
As for the show itself? It’s set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, years before the events of JRR Tolkien’s trilogy. LOTR Some characters from the trilogy, including younger versions of the sprites Galadriel (played by Morfydd Clark) and Elrond (Robert Aramayo), appear in the new story, which will lead to the titular ring The Making and Rise of Sauron. Originally scheduled to premiere on Prime Video on Friday, the premiere was moved up a few hours to 9pm ET/6pm PT Thursday.

Animated sci-fi seriesPantheon, voiced by Katie Chang, Daniel Dae Kim and Paul Dano, Premieres Thursday on AMC+. HOUSE OF THE HAMMER (Friday, Discovery+) uses the allegations against actor Armie Hammer as a starting point to delve into the sordid history of his wealthy family. Emily Deschanel in the limited series Devils of Ohio (Friday, Netflix).
On the cable…
Returns: Rick and Morty Season 6 on Sunday afternoon begins, and by the time it ends, the show is still Not even halfway through, 70 – Episode Update Adult Swim at 2018 featured the show. The season begins where it left off last, with the protagonist trapped in space after being double-killed by the evil Morty. Will they survive? perhaps! After all, they still have all these episodes to play.
return: The critically acclaimed TV series Queen Sugar begins its seventh and final season on OWN by Ava DuVernay on Tuesday at 8pm. American Dad resumes its first 18 at Season on TBS Monday afternoon.
On the air…
Sports: After a few games last week, the college football season officially kicks off this weekend. In the bigger game, Saturday’s doubleheader on ABC: Oregon vs Georgia (3: 70 pm ET/18: 31 PM PT) and Ohio State Notre Dame (7: 30 PM ET/4: 31 PM PT).
Also: Season 3 of The CW’s Stargirl kicks off Wednesday at 8pm.
