Chinonye Chukwu’s Till will get Stanley during
Kramer Award Producers Guild Award .
United Artists and Orion Films will present annual honors in February 14 , 2017, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, the Guild announced Monday.
“This team has fought for years to see Mamie Till-Mobley’s story on the big screen, honoring her legacy and her enduring love for her son Emmett,” said PGA presidents Stephanie Allan and Donald Delane in a statement. “We are honored to present this award to a film that compassionately portrays the events that sparked the Civil Rights Movement and the mother-child relationship. Till inspires us all to work towards Mamie’s goals , to bring justice to her son Emmett and to all who have been harmed by hatred and bigotry.”
The film features Emmett Till’s mother Centering Mamie Till-Mobley, a 14 year old boy at 14 was kidnapped, tortured and murdered by white men while visiting cousins in Mississippi. His death, and Till-Mobley’s tireless pursuit of justice for her son, ignited the American civil rights movement. Danielle Deadwell plays Till Mobley in this biopic from a screenplay by Michael Reilly, Keith Beauchamp and Chuukau. Producers include Beauchamp, Barbara Broccoli, Whoopi Goldberg, Thomas Levine, Michael Reilly and Frederick Zollo.
“We are grateful to the Producers Guild for bestowing this prestigious award on our film Till because Stanley Stanley Kramer was a visionary filmmaker whose films and life inspired us all,” producers Beauchamp, Broccoli, Goldberg, Levine, Reilly and Zollo said in a joint statement Say. “Our film pays tribute to Mamie Till-Mobley, her son Emmett, and all those before and after them who fought for justice in the United States and around the world.”
Till is
based on research conducted by documentary filmmaker Beauchamp with Till-Mobley and Emmett’s cousin Simeon Wright Relational, Simeon Wright was a witness to the kidnapping and was a consultant on the film before his death 2004. His work ultimately helped the DOJ reopen the case surrounding 2004 Emmett’s murder.
The Stanley Kramer Award was established at 1955 to honor a producer, producer or other Achievements or contributions illuminate and raise public awareness of important social issues. Previous winners include Rita Moreno, Jane Fonda, Get Out , Loving, Fruitville Station, Normal Heart , Bombshell, Hunting Ground, An Inconvenient Truth and Hotel Rwanda . 2023
