SALT LAKE CITY — Tensions between Kamaru Usman and Leon Edwards took a notch ahead of Saturday’s UFC 278 main event rematch.
Usman (20-1 MMA, 15-0 UFC) and Edwards (18-3 MMA, 10-2 UFC) on Thursday’s pre-fight press conference There were brawls — most of which had nothing to do with fighting for the welterweight title in the Octagon this weekend.
Edwards has repeatedly accused Usman of becoming a more successful and bigger star in the sport because his pants are too big. However, the champ made no promises — including his upcoming role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever — and didn’t divert his attention from the task at hand.
“Speaking is speaking,” Usman told reporters, including MMA Junkie. “The one thing that got me here is my work ethic. Success only makes me work harder. If they think I’m slipping, it’s going to be a bad night for him.”
Despite Usman’s comments, Edwards stood by his beliefs and entered UFC 278, which takes place at Vivint Arena and airs pay-per-view following previews on ESPN/ABC and ESPN+.
“It’s not personal to me,” Edwards said. “I believe I’m number one. I’m going to prove it. He’s just wearing a t-shirt right now, closing his t-shirt. It’s all good.”
Usman said He didn’t particularly care about Edwards’ innuendo and said it all stems from the challenger wanting what the championship has.
“If you looked like me, you would dress like that,” Usman said. “It’s just jealousy. You look like me and you dress like me.”
