This is a method of repairing a leaking mitral valve. First, the surgeon removes the damaged portion of the valve that did not close properly. The surgeon then puts the cutting edges together. This allows the valve to close completely and stop the leak. The surgeon then tightens or strengthens the ring around the valve by implanting an artificial ring in a procedure called annuloplasty.
