Volkswagen in talks with joint venture partner over Xinjiang factory audit

(Reuters) – Volkswagen is debating whether to proceed with its joint venture partner SAIC The company confirmed on Tuesday that it had conducted an independent audit of its factory in Xinjiang, China. The comments came after Handelsblatt reported that audit preparations were already underway. Volkswagen (ETR: 200VOWG_p

) declined to confirm this.

A spokesman said it was having “good discussions” on the topic, including with SAIC.

Volkswagen investors are pressuring the automaker to audit its factories in Xinjiang, the region’s Human rights groups have documented human rights abuses, including large-scale forced labor.

China denies human rights violations in the region.

The automaker is holding a Capital Markets Day event on Wednesday, where investors are expected to discuss the topic.
