The anchor has given over $25 million dollars to the main creative talent for this film.
Recession looming? puff. Are the streaming wars over? Double pshaw.
With its high priced spy bag Red Shirt, a spy thriller bag with a bold name Channing Tatum , David Leitch and Simon Kinberg, Amazon has shown that it is willing to work on a The era in which the streaming giants and major studios are rethinking their movie strategies.
The studio has been paid over $50 million for the main creative talent of an original thriller Dollar Tatum is attached to star, Leach is attached to direct, and Kinberg writes. All three are produced through their respective banners, Free Association, 50 North and Genre Films.
According to multiple sources, the deal calls for a payment of $50 to Tatum $, Leitch received $ million and Kinberg received $8 million for his services. The fee, which included production services, was one of, if not the highest, for an original pitch in the history of a Hollywood deal, making Kinberg one of the highest-paid screenwriters around. His writing contract is said to be worth $6 million. These figures include buyout fees paid by anchors to cover any potential back-end losses from not showing in theaters. There’s also a potential theatrical component to the deal.
CAA, representing Tatum, Leitch and Kinberg, had no comment. Amazon also had no comment.
There are different permutations of this deal, and it could go many different ways. The shirts hit the shelves a week before Thanksgiving and are expected to spark a fire in the company’s commercial division. That’s right, it’s a hit: Tatum proved his star quality this year with two pandemic-era hits, MGM’s Dogs and Paramount’s The Lost City of D ; Leitch is one of the most popular action directors currently working in Hollywood; Kinberg will be back with Genre with which Mr. began his writing career. & Mrs. Smith.
But the eyeballs start popping fast. The price of any deal, be it a streamer or a studio, would be astronomical. Some studios bid, and even got creative to make the numbers work. One studio offered theatrical promises, but only at a lower price. The studio is asking for 50 day theater commitments. Tatum gets a lower fee, but if the final movie is a hit, there is a backend advantage like 50 % pool.
Then certain studios started dropping out. According to one person, even Netflix exited quickly, a sobering assessment of the market as the company has blown budgets and talent compensation over the past few years with movies like The boundaries of Red Notice and The Gray Man , the latter costing more than $87 million budget. However, another source said the streamer held on until near the end.
On Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, Tatum decided to partner with Amazon, accepting Amazon’s offer of a guaranteed prepaid streamer. It really was a happy turkey day for the trio and their team.
The deal shows that Amazon is an aggressive player when it comes to what it sees as top talent, and is another sign that the company is gearing up for content push. Last week, it announced a four-picture movie deal with Tyler Perry, which also landed a miniseries in which Scarlett Johansson will make her TV debut.
Tatum is also represented by Hansen Jacobson LLP, Leitch is also represented by Johnson Shapiro and Kinberg is represented by Jackoway Austen.
