While the idea may sound a bit intimidating, New York City-based dermatologist and Mohs surgeon Dr. Mary Stevenson explains why it’s really not a big deal. What is microneedling?
First, Stevenson clarifies the difference between at-home microneedling and in-office procedures. “Overall,” she says, “[at-home methods] are less effective.” In a doctor’s office, however, the treatment has been shown to help improve the skin’s overall texture and stimulate collagen production. “The needles range from 0.5 to 2.5 mm and are rotated on the skin through a pen-like device, which creates tiny wounds that disrupt the stratum corneum – the topmost layer of the skin – to the epidermis and the deeper dermis ,” she explained. “If we can create tiny, controlled damage, then we can boost collagen formation,” which in turn keeps skin firmer and thicker with age. This procedure is often combined with the topical application of platelet-rich plasma or PRP, which helps to speed healing.
What are the benefits of microneedling?
“Microneedling can be used to help with a variety of problems,” explains Stevenson. “This treatment minimizes pores and improves skin quality and texture,” in addition to helping reduce the appearance of acne scars, stretch marks and even fine lines. Still, according to board-certified Dr. Dendy Engleman, at-home treatment may still help relieve lesser problems, especially after an in-office appointment. “While at-home microneedling is effective, especially with continued use over time, the technique works only on minor, superficial scars and lines—it won’t work wonders,” she says. The needles on the device are smaller and the treatment is gentler than in the office, so microneedling at home can take months to see results. However, it’s good practice to incorporate it into your daily routine — and sticking with it will pay off in the long run. It’s also a great way to refill microneedling between office appointments. “
