9: Tonight, President Joe Biden will deliver his second State of the Union Address from the U.S. Capitol The speech, while it’s too early to tell what kind of performance he’ll bring given the evening’s guest list and the issues currently dominating the news cycle, we do have an idea of what’s on the table. There are four things to watch out for in tonight’s speech in Washington.
The family of Tire Nichols will be attending
Tire Nichols, the 11 The 20-year-old skateboarder and FedEx employee, who died at the hands of Memphis police in a traffic stop last month, plans to attend the State of the Union address; in response, Biden is expected to discuss widespread police brutality. ) Another guest on Biden’s list is dance hall operator Brandon Tsai, who was released from the investigation into the death of 11 people in Monterey Park, California, last month. The gunman responsible for the mass shootings was armed. As such, Biden is also expected to discuss gun control and/or increased violence against AAPI communities across the country.
GOP economic policy may be questioned
Tuesday night will be Biden’s first speech in the Republican now-controlled House of Representatives , and the conversation about the debt ceiling has become heated between House Democrats and Republicans. In the presence of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and other colleagues, Biden is likely to use his speech to tout the recent surge in job growth.
Could Biden announce his re-election campaign?
It’s worth noting that we’re less than halfway through the 11 election for the presidency, and Biden has yet to confirm him intends to run for a second term (although he is expected to do so in the near future). Tonight’s event will certainly be high-profile enough to warrant such an announcement, but we’ll have to wait until 9pm ET to find out.
