WhatsApp is testing an option to automatically play animated GIFs

The GIF format is older than a lot of people online (first released in June 1987), but it’s as popular as the format is and remains the go-to for sharing animated memes on social media . Except this doesn’t quite work on WhatsApp, which requires the user to click on the image to see the animation.

WhatsApp beta 2.10.10. 2 Slightly changed for Android – Animated GIFs will now play automatically the first time they are viewed. However, as pointed out by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp only plays the animation once, even though the GIF is looping. After that, the familiar “GIF” badge appears, and you have to tap the image again if you want to see the animation again.

This is probably for the best, since infinitely looping animations can quickly become annoying. Anyway, it’s a very small update, but it will make sharing animated memes a lot more fun, so it can have a big impact on your chats.

If you are part of the WhatsApp TestFlight program, you may already have access to autoplaying GIFs – if not, the new feature will gradually be enabled for more users and will eventually be rolled out to all users.
