Why Short Suits Should Be Your Next Spring Investment

Everyone is talking about the red off-the-shoulder dress in Pretty Woman , but my favorite is the classic look The rom-com is the colorful short suit that Julia Roberts wears towards the end of the movie. As Vivian, Roberts underwent a major film makeover, and her red cropped suit (with pleated extra-wide shorts at the bottom!) was her final style statement. Who would have thought that Bermuda shorts could be paired with a blazer and heels?

Turns out, the runways and celebrities are embracing this more casual look this season. Forgoing traditional trousers, the cut is streamlined for a more casual and relaxed feel. Designers are reinventing cropped suits for baggy and oversized silhouettes. At Brandon Maxwell, a cropped black tuxedo jacket was paired with baggy lederhosen; at Ami, an oversized yellow double-breasted blazer was paired with mini shorts. These look decidedly cooler and more stylish than your standard suit, which often reads too prim or too formal for a more casual outing. These vibrant sets are for an evening out, not a board meeting!

fashion stars have even started wearing them on the street. Earlier this week, for example, Gigi Hadid showed up in a short beige suit that Maxwell had just shown on the catwalk. She teamed the suit with a matching cream blouse underneath and styled it with pale cream pumps. At last month’s Fendi menswear show, J Balvin opted for a cropped black suit—he also likes the overall loose fit. However, you can also do a more condensed version. In Los Angeles, Jennifer Lawrence wore a navy blazer with slim, cropped shorts (we also loved the off-white Mary Janes she paired with them).
