We are just one night away from the start of the biggest tournament in global football. With the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar – a controversial choice of host, to say the least – the 32 best national teams in the world will compete to see which country can occupy the next four matches. The year of football dominance.
The World Cup will be held in November for the first time. Competitions are usually held every four years in June and July. The decision to change the schedule was made to avoid the harsh midsummer heat of the Middle East. Games were also shortened by four days to minimize mid-season disruption, as many domestic leagues around the world have suspended their schedules to allow their top players to play for their respective national teams.
Team USA will be participating in the World Cup for the first time since 2014, but failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The young side will be led by 24-year-old striker Christian Pulisic, who has scored just one goal in 12 Premier League appearances for Chelsea this season. Despite difficulties at club level, Pulisic scored a hat-trick against Panama in a World Cup qualifier in March this year. Pulisic and the rest of the men’s national team will have to excel to emerge from tough Group B games against England, Wales and Iran.
The first game of the 2022 World Cup kicks off on Sunday, November 20 at 11AM ET (8AM PT) , hosts Qatar and Ecuador will play a group match. The game will air on FS1 in the US and Peacock in Spanish. Team USA makes its debut against Wales on Telemundo and Peacock in Spanish on Monday, November 21 at 2pm ET (11am PT) on Fox.
