For the first time in the competition’s history, games will be played in winter, interrupting club football season schedules. This is the last time we’ll see this format take place with 32 teams before expanding to 48 in time for 2026 when the United States, Mexico and Canada host it.
Speaking of the US, after failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the Americans finally made their long-awaited return to the world’s biggest stage with a draw against Wales stage. This is Team USA’s 11th World Cup appearance and has qualified for eight of the past nine World Cups. Gregg Berhalter’s USMNT finished third in the eight-team Concacaf qualifying group behind Mexico and Canada.
