The big picture: The foldable season is in full swing, and Xiaomi doesn’t want to be left out. The Chinese tech giant’s latest foldable is its most advanced yet, and it’s ready to compete with new offerings from Samsung and Motorola for your hard-earned cash.
Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 features the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 mobile platform with 12GB of LPDDR5 (6,400Mbps) RAM and your choice of 256GB, 512GB or 1TB UFS 3.1 Local Storage. The external display measures 6.56 inches diagonally, with a resolution of 2,520 x 1,080, a refresh rate of 120Hz, and a P3 color gamut coverage. It’s coated with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus for added durability.
The internal display is an 8.02-inch Samsung Eco2 (eco-square) OLED with a resolution of 2,160 x 1,914, LTPO 2.0 adaptive refresh rate at 1-120Hz. It also supports the P3 color gamut, and its anti-AR coating is said to reduce reflectance to less than 2%. We’re told dual ambient light sensors on the front and back allow for smooth automatic brightness adjustment.
Xiaomi’s latest model Equipped with a 50-megapixel IMX776 camera sensor from Sony with a seven-element f/1.8 aperture, Leica certified lens and an ALD low-reflection coating. There’s also a 13-megapixel f/2.4 ultra-wide lens with a 15mm focal length, and an 8-megapixel f/2.6 aperture lens with a 45mm focal length. The front-facing camera is a 20-megapixel unit.
Xiaomi has developed a new hinge mechanism for foldable devices – known as the microdrop hinge – with a smaller bending radius. That makes the device just 11.2mm thick when folded flat; when unfolded in tablet mode, it’s just 5.4mm thick.
Battery life isn’t covered, but we know the phone packs a 4,500mAh battery pack that supports a 67W wired charger. Symmetrical sound is delivered through dual Harman Kardon-tuned speakers, and the phone supports Dolby Atmos, Hi-Res Audio and Wireless Hi-Res Audio. It will run the Xiaomi MIUI Fold 13 operating system based on Android 12.
Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 will be released in China on August 16, available in black or gold. Pricing starts at 8,999 yuan ($1,333) for the device with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, and is expandable to 11,699 ($1,735) for the 1TB model.
