Date 22, the inscription plate reveals the trophy as the Rolaids Relief Man Award, awarded to Dave Righetti , in recognition of his dominance in the Yankees bullpen. The discovery made Britton realize that the Yankees now should have something similar to share among their relievers.
Now they do arrive. Britton introduces a new clubhouse tradition, where rescuers receive real FDNY helmets after each win in recognition of the best performance in the bullpen of the day. Each winner has a sticker with the pitcher’s uniform number on their helmet; Britton’s goal is to see it fully covered by the end of October.
“We had a lot of young guys this year, I got hurt, Greenie [Chad Green] got hurt, [Aroldis] Chapman had some struggles,” Britton said. “We were in Baltimore when I was a young reliever. There’s something like that, it’s just a friendly game, there’s some motivation to go there. In this case, you want to be the one who gets the helmet.”
