About the Yankees Knowledge of team spring training
1. A short story
Young could be available this spring, with prospects Oswald Peraza and Anthony Volpe both in training camp and expected to get a fair amount at shortstop playing time. Peraza and Volpe will take on Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who won 131 The starter was at shortstop last season but struggled defensively, prompting manager Aaron Boone to leave him out of the starting lineup in four of the club’s nine playoff games.
Feels like the Yankees want to see Peraza in Winning the job outright this spring will allow them to move Kiner-Falefa into a more utility role and provide Volpe with additional development time. But left field is much the same as it was during the playoffs, with Andrew Benintendi (who hasn’t played since Sept. 2) left to join the White Sox.
This makes Oswaldo Cabrera and Aaron Hicks the most promising Candidates who might get playing time at this position, with Harrison Bader at center and Judge on right. Giancarlo Stanton could also see some defensive innings, but Boone said he doesn’t want Stanton to play in Yankee Stadium’s wide-open left field, but instead wants him to play right field in Judge’s days as the designated hitter.
Hicks at 178, but general manager Brian Cashman said he doubted Hicks would win the Work (Hicks has three years and $15 millions of contracts remaining). Cabrera could force a different decision in his strong spring. The Yankees see him as a useful jack-of-all-trades; after being drafted in mid-August, he played every position except center fielder, pitcher and receiver.
3. Starting five
Boone has said that the envisioned starting rotation may be the best since he took over management
