Today Google proudly announces “the beginning of the end of passwords”. That’s because it’s first started rolling out Keys, which it calls “the easiest and most secure way to log in to apps and websites, and a major step toward a password-free future.”
These are really big words. Passcode lets you log in to apps and websites the same way you unlock your phone: with your fingerprint, face scan, or screen lock PIN. Thus, keys are resistant to online attacks such as phishing, making them more secure than SMS one-time codes etc.
However, please remember that if you use a passcode, your screen unlock PIN is now weak link – if it looks like or If someone steals your phone, they can also access all your password protected accounts.
Starting today, password login will be an option for Google Account users. Services such as Docusign, Kayak, PayPal, Shopify, and Yahoo! Japan have also deployed some level of key support.
If you want to try out the key for your Google account, go here. And don’t forget to set a secure multi-digit PIN on your phone. For Google Workspace accounts, administrators will soon have the option to enable keys for their end users.
