Zuhair Murad has stars in his eyes. One of them is Taylor Swift, who he’s been working with since last fall. But for the resort, the designer turned to two of Hollywood’s brightest past stars: Joan Crawford and Raquel Welch. He’s borrowed heavily from the “super sexy” heydays of Crawford and Welch for a collection he sees as half 1920transformed opulence and half “sexy,” with some motifs nodding to Art Deco icons like New York’s Chrysler and the Empire State Building (a closer look reveals his initials are part of it, too).
Somewhat unexpectedly, many of these looks have Murad’s relatively minimalist style, as if he was determined to let bold colors—fuchsia, periwinkle, yellow—and negative space come to life. Talk, and maybe some sparkly diamond coils to help. Mixes of fringed lace and lace are treated in tones, such as a yellow off-the-shoulder bohemian dress or a distressed white long-sleeved dress with layered skirts and ruffled collars.
While you won’t see it here, many of these looks are not only meant to be eye-catching, but are also dramatic exits thanks to the open-back cut. Just in case anyone needs a little extra cover, Murad has also rolled out a sharp-looking trench this season – a piece that’s a new exercise for him and no doubt his North Climate customers will appreciate it.
